About this deal

When the psychiatrist worked in British cycling he had a rule that athletes could come to him and “let their chimp out” – but they had to complain for 15 minutes non-stop. Steve has also authored 3 other books including the bestselling self-help book of all time in the UK, The Chimp Paradox, which has sold over a million copies - as per Nielsen TCM Chart 2020.

My Hidden Chimp is an effective and powerful new educational book that offers parents, teachers and carers some ideas and thoughts on how to help children to develop healthy habits for life. Thinks in black and white: Chimps see situations as either very good or very bad, and are unable to process subtleties.Following this, each short explanation is accompanied by a way to calm or quieten the chimp's poor behaviour, which in turn will help with our own behaviours and feelings. Recently she had to go to after school club at the last minute because I was running late getting home from work and she will cry and get really upset because she didn't expect to have to go. A reward is like “I’ll give myself a treat only when I’ve done … [supply what you don’t want to do here]”.

Another thing that I liked about my Hidden Chimp is the inclusion of scenarios which show the book's concepts in action. He was trying to work out if I was bi-polar, and in conversation suggested The Chimp Paradox by Steve Peters. T hese lower level selves…want to fight even when their higher level selves want to figure things out. Vent to someone you trust, who will understand that your feelings are coming from your Chimp and won’t punish you for them later. I think we sometimes forget as parents that children are extremely strongly programmed not to be alone and to remain tight to a parent figure.

The Chimp Model is an incredibly powerful mind management model that can help you become a happy, confident, healthier, and more successful person. Is there a relation between the “inner child”, as described in recovery and trauma literature, and the concept of the “inner chimp”? My first comment is to explain to your daughter that what she is experiencing is very normal and healthy, even though this is unhelpful. We work with you individually to help you understand what is going on in your mind using The Chimp Model.By understanding this we can start to see when our Chimp is over-reacting in an over-emotional way to things like tough feedback. The 'problem' could be that as adults we try to thwart this powerful and sensible drive to conform with what is practical. I imagine the challenge to create a book about neuroscience which is aimed at children would not be an easy one and yet My Hidden Chimp does an excellent job of making a complex concept understandable and relatable. Now that I have read the child-friendly version, my appetite has been whetted and I would like to know more. My son has suddenly become very sensitive and is taking things that other people say very much to heart, even when there is no malice intended, it’s as though he has lost all perspective and he thinks everyone is against him now.
