About this deal

In the eerie days after the storm, he traveled the flooded streets in a secondhand canoe, passing on supplies and rescuing those he could.

I thought that this book was very mysterious and could make you feel anxious at times because when the guards come close to finding out about the escape, it makes you tense. Campbell Bruce wrote Escape from Alcatraz, a chronicle of escape attempts over the lifetime of the prison that focuses especially on one notorious episode in June of 1962. San Francisco Bay's brutal currents and bitterly cold water have taken many a life from those who test its power. My son has said for a long time he would like to visit Alcatraz, and I think I do, too, now that I know more about what happened. Prisons are complex and volatile places, administered and occupied by people with conflicting agendas. I love how the author explained a bit of history of the three men and what led them to being in prison at Alcatraz. Campbell Bruce chronicles in spellbinding detail the absorbing saga of Alcatraz—the "inescapable" prison—where America's most violent and notorious prisoners resided in tortuous proximity to one of the world's favorite cities.

The federal prison system is just one example of an environment in which political expediency, fear, limited resources, and human frailties interact in unpredictable ways. One literary element that I believed help this book was the setting and the amount of information the author used to help let the reader picture the escape more vividly. The photos of the Alcatraz prison and escape routes add much to the entertainment value of this book. Naming their secret club after the fiery British leader, the young patriots in the Churchill Club committed countless acts of sabotage, infuriating the Germans, who eventually had the boys tracked down and arrested.
