About this deal

John Ellis was Britain's executioner for 23 years, and in his time he hanged some of the most infamous murderers of all time. The second is the executioners log book on how and why each person was executed and finally the last chapter is of people he was tasked to punish and exile. Each entry in Part 1 concerns one of the 300 executions carried out by Schmidt - they include the date (sometimes) of the execution, the name and alias of the victim, the crime, and the method, and other information if relevant. Steffan Hötzelein, alias der Lauffenhöltzer, a wire-drawer at Lauff, who accused Georg Schwindel, a councillor there, saying he had seen him commit lewdness with four women; his father, Hans Hötzelein, whose fingers were struck off, bore witness in the matter, the father saying it happened under an oak-tree, the son, on the contrary, under a fir-tree.

I loved reading it and having the main character help me take on a perspective that doing his this job didn't mean that he believed everything he was told, and that it meant a lot to him to make a living, although it was a low life status. This was definitely a diary that he used to keep track of those that he executed and how they were executed.

The people in the diary lived in a world that was, in some significant ways, utterly different to ours. All three beheaded with the sword as murderesses and their heads nailed above the great scaffold, no woman having been beheaded before this at Nuremberg. For these deeds he, Stüller, was drawn out on a sledge at Bamberg, his body torn thrice with red-hot tongs, and then he was executed on the wheel. Most of our PDFs are also available to download and we're working on making the final remaining ones downloadable now. Lately, consorting with thieves and robbers, formed a band of sixteen, attacked people by night at Mossfühl, at Esterfeld and at the mill near Würzburg, also at Pühel and Hennau and many other places.Likewise, certain cases they omit various details I would have liked to read, lists of stolen items, lists of murders committed by someone, etc. The first sets the scene explaining what legal life was like in late medieval/early renaissance Germany and why the legal system worked how it did. Just reading the reasons for the executions - not easy reading, although amusing to note how crime hasn't changed and punishment has - provides a treasure trove of information. the executioner's section is a very dry, statement-of-the-facts account of the crimes people committed and the way he executed them. Eight years later, in September 1932, after another bout of heavy drinking, Ellis died by suicide, cutting his throat with a razor.

The methods and reasons for torture and execution were also an interesting insight into the medieval mindset.

Theft and murder being the most common but i was surprised at the amount of infanticide, child-murder, and even one account of bestiality in the book. However, it is an interesting first hand account of the latter medieval Europe and the the chaos that it existed in. but there is a really good essay about the german criminal justice system in the 1500s and 1600s in the beginning of the book. If you're expecting a diary of a traditional sort, where hopes and dreams are discussed, look elsewhere.

Some are just things of interest like "I dissected and cut up his body" (114), "Had only one leg, and had to be carried out to execution" (164) and others. Crippen) in 1910, Frederick Seddon in 1912, Sir Roger Casement in 1916, Herbert Rowse Armstrong in 1922, and of Edith Thompson in 1923. It's interesting when preceeded by the first half of the book which is the introduction to criminal procedure in medieval Germany. W. Gruner have put together a masterful tome that sets the scene of execution day and puts you in Master Franz Schmidts shoes as he does his duty for his country. Keller's part about Schmidt was a good introduction to the actual diary and gave me some perspective on certain entries or absence thereof (*cough cough* the brother-in-law).In Keller's words, Schmidt only records "cases where life and limb actually suffered" making this "Diary a veritable book of blood" (93). Others were more interesting, going into great depth about the criminals, their nicknames, the crimes they committed, and how they went to their deaths. The woman Dörfflerin, when she brought forth her child in the garden behind the Fort, left it lying alive in the snow so that it froze to death. The journal is edited, with occasional notes in brackets explaining that information has been cut (generally items in lists, for example with thieves, where 2 or 3 thefts are given details and others left out for space).
