About this deal

Morrison's stories not only consolidated all of Batman's published history into one cohesive unit but also cemented the idea of Batman always coming out on top. Of course it’s hard to come up with new stuff after a character’s been around for 80+ years, but it’s like Zdarsky isn’t even trying sometimes.

BUT its the art of Jiemenez which should get the most credit as he makes each page look like a million bucks and so worth it and ugh I can't praise it enough!I always want creative teams to succeed, but there comes a point where I just feel kind of hopeless. Writing grim and gritty superheroes is fun, but when it consumes most of your life, you can feel a little bit of depression sinking in.

Doppelgänger Gets Same Sentiment: Discussed; as Batman prepares to leave Red Mask's world, he asks the still-living alternate Alfred to come with him, but each acknowledges that trying to replace "their" Bruce and Alfred with an alternate wouldn't be fair to the ones they knew, even if they exchange fond farewells. This could have been a cool adventure, but nothing here feels earned because things are just kind of happening. It's an interesting story that ends with the reveal that penguin is still alive (that was a rather short lived death. The writing is really great, with Chip Zdarsky's characteristic narration and Leonardo Romero's beautiful artwork.

Also, with a character like that, it’s got to be passed by higher [corporate] levels than what I’m usually used to. He removes his specially-designed uniform pants, wrapping them around his face to protect the exposed skin, while falling toward the Arctic circle in the final leg of the 240,000-mile trip. Not only do they tie into the main narrative wonderfully, but they also delve into some of the characters’ motives and actually add something useful and consequential to ongoing events. The story is weak; the villain is uninteresting; nothing’s really at stake for Batman; and the ending feels unearned. The dynamics between them, especially as they grapple with the absence of Batman, provide an emotional undercurrent that resonates deeply. The aftermath of Failsafe has stripped the city of its savior, leaving its citizens vulnerable to the sinister machinations of characters like Harvey Dent and Killer Croc.
