The outward structures of misery yet remain, in society, in our selves, but a new self-world-story has formed within both. Would you agree that transitioning away from fossil fuels is highly desirable for many reasons, but that this alone is only one part of the overall changes we need to make in how we live? That said, I find myself agreeing with you that this is far from a “mission accomplished” moment, as much as I would like to take some much-needed time off from advocacy. His climate change book revisits many of the themes discussed in the first two books just mentioned, but is (obviously) focused on the climate crisis. And as my horizons broadened, I knew that millions were not supposed to be starving, that nuclear weapons were not supposed to be hanging over our heads, that the rainforests were not supposed to be shrinking, or the fish dying, or the condors and eagles disappearing.

For example, a universal basic income would be great if it didn’t come with dependency on a government that could take it away if, for example, you espouse subversive ideas. I went to Taiwan right out of college, because I felt like such an alien in my home country, and I couldn’t make myself get with the program. First, the chosen measures of well-being are loaded with the values and assumptions of the very culture (ours) that is assessing progress and naming itself as the most advanced. Only our efforts at tower-building blind us to it, our gaze forever skyward, forever seeking to escape this Earth, this feeling, this moment. It will in fact require the kinds of technologies that are inaccessible to the consciousness that wants to escape responsibility for earth. Why do you focus on beauty as such an important aspect of life, and of what’s missing in our modern world, with its “uglification” and industrialization of so much around us? The situation on Earth today is too dire for us to act from habit—to reenact again and again the same kinds of solutions that brought us to our present extremity. Eisenstein’s perspective is that we’re too cynical and locked in our old ways, and we need to loosen up a little. Because when, when, when the structures of normal disintegrate, what comes out, it’s this suppressed aspect of human nature that, that wants to collaborate and cooperate and take care of each other that’s bursting to happen. Furthermore, any policy that shifts economic activity from a local to a global scale will damage community, because even when money is used to facilitate local transactions, something else happens along with money exchange.

When we tear away the ideologies, the labels, and the rationalizations, we show ourselves the truth of what we are doing, and conscience awakens. I first came to Charles’ body of work with his astounding “ Coronation” essay from April 2020 (which we discuss a little below). If you could sum up The More Beautiful W They both want oneness, togetherness, and acceptance of the body as ourselves, but – let’s keep fat shaming. In his wisdom, the author doesn't claim to be right, he claims only to be pointing in the direction of an understanding that can free us from the painful experiences of separation, lack, and entity that plague us.
