About this deal

A love letter to books, so many are mentioned and how they might help with various emotional states. It's filled with the recommendations that they provide - books for loneliness, books to scare you, books for being normal or books to travel somewhere new. My only negative is that it is perhaps a bit repetitive with the letters and the book lists as my enjoyment lies in the characters that you follow through. While fiction, it is packed with the realities of what real people encountered, suffered through, triumphed over.

It also brought into sharp clarity the ease with which it is possible to put someone in danger, quite unintentionally, because of naivety on our part. The very real aspect of this being set through the pandemic made it quite challenging at times and brought back some of those very weird emotions I know a lot of people felt during such a weird time, but it also reminded me of how much I read at that time and how important books were to me then, when I had nothing else to do but sit and worry. So I made the purchase, and then read over half the book on the flight, finishing it a few days later. I know I couldn’t have listened to it if it had been published earlier, so the timing has been perfect for me.

Now she is happier, healthier, and more careful with her precious life and the precious people and things in it.I adored this novel but I cautiously recommend it, as I am aware that the Covid-19 pandemic is ongoing and a novel about it may be triggering for some people.

It's really interesting to think of the role that books had in the pandemic to help people to cope and certainly I find that that's still true now. The intricate plot lines, the pandemic situation, the development of the characters - a great achievement. I work in the library and read over 100 books a year in various genres but still would not be so presumptuous as to think I could recommend books to people I don’t know. Although she’d never have chosen it, her dance with cancer has changed her life in many positive ways. I think a part of this was because the story is driven far more by the characters than by the plot and I'd be hard-pressed to define exactly what the plot is.They get personally involved with a few of them, and of course we get the backstory of the small staff as well. I come from Whitby and know York very well and there were countless mistakes regarding both places which really annoyed me and prevented me believing that’s where they were supposed to be. But it worked very well as a flight book - it’s an engaging story with people who got under my skin. However, she introduced wayyy to many secondary characters that were not integral to the main plot and it just got distracting.
